MarketWATCH Muskoka: 20 June 2018

Yesterday walking off the golf course, my friend said he was going to drive back to the cottage, clean up and return with his wife for a charitable event, I opined that it was a lot of driving. He said that if you live here, there’s a lot of driving to do. Hadn’t really thought about it before, but he’s right. 24 kms from Port Carling to Bracebridge, half an hour from Bracebridge to Bala, 35 mins from Gravenhurst to Huntsville, over an hour from Bracebrdge to Haliburton. No wonder I put more than 60K kms on the car a year. This is big territory.

When you’re at the cottage more often than not, you stay there, enjoying the dock, water and the friends who come to visit. For most of us the cottage world is a small one even though Muskoka is big territory.

On Sunday there was a tribute to Dads in downtown Bracebridge. It could’ve been a tribute to Muskoka and all the driving we do. Lined all up and down Manitoba Street from the top of the hill to the bottom, from Shoppers’ Drug Mart to the bridges, on both sides of the road were cars, trucks, firetrucks, panel vans, sports cars, limousines, convertibles, coupes, sedans and a hearse. All special, all collectors items: Ferraris, Vettes, a 1937 V-12 Lincoln and the list goes on. And who were out to see them? Why just about everyone! Especially the Dads.

It was a beautiful day. Seeing the chrome from the 50’s and 60’s brought back memories of first driving here with my parents. A trip from the city could take 5 hours on the open road. There was always a stop for ice cream on the way. No 4 or 6 lane highways. Lots of meandering 2 laners travelling through small towns, past farms and forests. Windows open all the way (so you could wave – and they would wave back).

Those cars brought back the memories cottages make. The scent of pine, cedar, bonfires and that musty cottage smell. The sound of screen doors slamming and ‘last one in!’ They kinda get in your blood and stand for all that’s right in the world. Cottages and old cars in Muskoka.

Here’s what came to market this week.
