We know the forest is dry. A fire ban is in effect. One day last week we could smell the smoke from Parry Sound 33 an 11,000 hectare burn north and west of Parry Sound more than 150 kms away. On the upside, smoke haze leads to great sunsets. We understand, too, that forest fires help regeneration – but that’s a long way off.
In the interim, dry forests have other side effects, primarily on forest inhabitants. Food stuffs are harder to find. Natural fruits and nuts are smaller and harder to forage. Dry forests drive animals to search outside their natural zones. That means more frequent sightings of creatures we rarely see. We even in town. The young fella pictured above was in a friend’s back yard.
Unfortunately dry forests also lead to more road kill – especially at dawn and dusk when many animals are out, avoiding the heat of the day. Drive with extra care in cottage country. Most cars survive an incident with deer. Some trucks don’t survive an incident with moose, many cars don’t. Be wary!
This week Muskoka Chautauqua has the Toronto All Star Big Band playing in Minett on Saturday. If you’ve never heard this group and enjoy the sounds of big bands and the swing era, these musicians will transport you to another time with verve! Terrific vocalists, harmonies and virtuoso musicianship. A great show!
