The last few days of June are usually a bit slow in waterfront real estate. Parents are thinking about kids getting out of school, getting them to summer jobs, off to camp or just getting a schedule down for time at home. Thoughts of buying a cottage are way down the list.

For us in real estate, it’s a brief respite before the summer trade begins. That respite, though, always ends with a bang! Canada Day.

It was around that time, July 1 1867, that Muskoka started to become a recreational destination. We once stayed in the oldest documented cottage in Muskoka. It’s on an island In Lake Joe. It was built in 1868 and we know the builders had stayed on the island the year previously in a tent on a platform. Canada’s birthday marks the beginning of recreational Muskoka. Muskoka’s pretty good at celebrating the anniversary too.

If you like to watch fireworks by water, Lake Muskoka on June 30 is the place to be. Walker’s Point Marina hosts its annual extravaganza. Dazzling colours reflected in the lake, hundreds of boats with their running lights on. Special!

Bracebridge Lions host arguably the best display of cottage country in downtown Bracebridge at Bracebridge Bay on the Muskoka River July 1. Also on the date Huntsville has its own show choreographed with a broadcast on The Moose. Fireworks to music. If you haven’t been to one of those concerts, then maybe THIS is the year!

No matter how you celebrate, be safe. Take a little time to reflect on the values we have as a nation, the things we hold dear and be thankful. We’re pretty lucky!
