Last week we gave you a chart of ice out dates since 1880. That’s a lot of data! Current state is we’ve passed the average date by 5 days. The warm, sunny day following a weekend of rain, has ‘ripened’ the lake ice so that it’s turning dark. Check out the pic of Lake Muskoka above. That dark stuff is ice.
That’s the first sign ice is leaving. Dark ice. Depending on how cool or cold nights are will hasten or slow the decline. And then one day, magic happens.
Magic? Well if you’ve ever tried to watch ice out happen, you’ll know what I mean. One moment ice is there, the next it’s not. You might expect to see something like a whale slowly breaching and rolling over, but no. No such luck. One moment it’s there. A blink later, it’s gone. Like the green flash of sunset. If you’ve seen that phenomenon, you may be lucky enough to see ‘ice out’. I’ve watched for both – and I’m still watching…and waiting.
One thing’s for sure, buyers wanting a cottage for the season aren’t waiting. Well priced property is moving in days. We’re seeing ‘solds’ come across every day. The good news for buyers is new listings are coming to market daily.
