Trillium. Our Provincial flower. Its 3 pointed bloom is easily recognized by graphic representation on official documents of Ontario; Driver’s Licenses and Health Cards. We see the flower almost every day throughout the year.

And yet, as it is now, with hardwood bushes being full of them carpeting the forest floor, we have to stop and admire their beauty. A simple, balanced design. Special!

It’s only when we look closer we notice not all trillium are white. Some are deep red and others a little rusty looking. Ontario has several varieties of the flower. Counts range between 3 and 5, depending upon the source. What’s for certain is while Ontario may claim the flower, some places have many more varieties and colours. Georgia and North Carolina are at the head of the pack almost 20!

Trillium time is also a flag for another season. Black flies. They’re out! This week should be the peak. The heat of the next few days will shorten their span. Once our leaves have popped and the forest crown is green, black flies in these parts will have done their thing. This weekend, though, is the high point. Light coloured clothing and repellant are necessary to enjoy the trillium display throughout cottage country.
