Summer officially starts this weekend with the longest day of the year. I bet we can all name several songs with summer in the title. Two from the 60’s come to mind this week, for different reasons.
Summer Wind was a chart topper for Sinatra. This week Muskoka really had a summer wind, accompanied by driving rain. It was short, sharp and devastating. Trees down in pockets from Bala to Dwight. Power was out for more than 50,000 for several hours. Cars, trucks and buildings were damaged. The way some of the large trees were twisted made it look like a series of small tornadoes touched down momentarily. Wind sheer is an awesome thing!
Summer in the City is the other song. Summer this year comes equipped with masks. It’s an accoutrement we literally can’t live without. Beaches and parks and golf courses are mostly open. There’s great temptation to revert to previous practices. Distancing, though, is a life saver. Just look at what’s happening across the continent where opening was premature. Infections of COVID are rising. Keeping our distance is a critical practice.
This year we’ve had an abnormally high number of competitive situations. It seems people are equating cottage property with seclusion and distancing. No doubt they’re a great place for the family bubble. Buyers are intent and sellers are savvy. Put an attractive ask on a property and watch seems to be the mantra.
Cottage country is not a big market compared to urban areas. There’s not nearly the same number of properties to choose from. Variation plays a part too.
