It’s not the latest date, but having ICE OUT in May is unusual. Some lakes are now open. Others will take a day or two more. It’s fairly safe to say that by the end of the weekend Muskoka will be open.
There are still a few cottages we have to walk in to. If you’re coming north, boots will make sense for the next week. The forecasted rains will certainly help firm up the soft ground. Yes, I know it sounds counter-intuitive, rain helping to firm things up. The truth is rain helps bring the frost out. It’s the frost escaping that turns ground into a quagmire.
Regardless, spring has been long and slow. One weather forecaster talked about March being extended and overtaking April. If the temperatures we enjoyed on Tuesday are any indication, we’ve bypassed April showers and jumped straight into May flowers.
Algonquin is in thaw mode now and the Watershed is very active. Falls and Rapids are in full bloom. Stay away from rivers and streams – they are flowing very quickly and are surprisingly powerful. The good news is the lakes that were low are rapidly returning to normal levels. Cottage sales are too.
The last week has been a busy one. Several properties have sold in competition and our lighter than usual inventory ( because of weather ) is getting thinner.
