This past Monday, cottage country was flowing. Whether you were in the woods, walking down a country road or on a lakeshore, the trickling sound of spring run off was everywhere. Ice and snow are leaving. Maybe that’s why the trickle sound seems such a happy noise.
At the same time, the sound is a harbinger of something else. Water runs along rocks and seeps through the tiniest cracks. It’s not uncommon, at this time of year, to find cottage lower levels damp and musty. Remember that old cottage smell? In many cases it comes from that happy trickle.
We’ve learned a lot about vapour barriers and are pretty adept keeping water at bay today. But there are plenty of cottages built before vapour barriers were introduced. Check the foundation of any cottage you’re looking at. Water can be an ongoing battle.
Before you get to the cottage, though, check the gravel roadway. Frost is coming out of the ground. There may be humps or hollows this week when there were none last week. Some of these humps or hollows really mask something else … a cavern. About once every three years or so we hear of people driving along and suddenly finding their truck sitting in the ground up to the door sills.
That vehicle through the ice last week might be through a road surface this week. Spring has sprung and it’s full of surprises! Enjoy the trickle and hope that’s all it is.
