If you look closely, snow might be visible in valleys and shady spots. For the most part, Muskoka is in spring! Forest floor is greening, wild leeks are showing their heads and the birds have one thing on their minds – and they’re singing about it!

Unlike previous springs, we have yet to see water levels changing in the Muskoka watershed. Granted, Algonquin is still covered with more than 2′ of ice and snow. The melt we’ve seen at the bottom end is not yet at the source. A good indicator of the change in water flow are the two pictures of Bracebridge Falls. These were taken 24 hours apart on Monday and Tuesday. The flow change is obvious. By the time you read this, the rocks in the spillway aren’t visible. It’s great news!

Water levels in our lakes and rivers are lower than normal. Lake Muskoka is about 3′ below expected levels. People with beaches have a lot more land at the moment. In fact, it’s fair to say water levels are currently what they were before the dam went in at Bala in 1915. They are ‘historic’. We expect that to change in the coming few weeks, but until then, docks are high and many submerged shoals are now visible cresting through the ice.

Ice is not yet out either. Normal ice out date is around the 17th of April. Some wags are betting on a May date this year. One thing’s for certain May 24th weekend – the season opener – is on schedule. Give we’re now in the third week of April, closing on a new cottage for the first long weekend of the season might be tough this year – but there’s plenty of time for a June closing.
