Ice out! Boat in!

On Monday we were visiting property on 3 different Muskoka Lakes, one large, one medium and the other ‘just right’. They all had ice in one form or another. The previous night had been well below 0. Protected waters had a thin sheen of clear ice, gently undulating as the lake moved. Away from shore, patches of dark showed remnants of thick sheets like black holes in the blue surround.

The thing about ice out is one moment ice is visible, the next only water remains. With years of trying to see it go, success comes rarely. Monday was no exception. Standing on the PreCambrian shore (which has seen more ice outs than we could count in a lifetime), we were basking in reflected sunlight from lake and rock, watching a black hole move like a large creature just below the surface.

A tinny with a small motor putted into view. We looked and commented that it was the first boat, then went back to the black hole. But it wasn’t there. It had gone. In its place an open lake patiently waiting for the happy sound of children’s laughter.
