MarketWATCH Muskoka: Come on in, the water’s fine!

“Come on in, the water’s fine!” Is a call of summer, along with “Last one in!” Cooling off is a ritual we enjoy at any age. Splash contests … can openers, Canadaball’s (as our kids called them), jumping from the boathouse roof all make water entry fun. The occasional, accidental belly flop causing both pain and laughter at the same time, adds to the splash of summertime fun. Grace is out the window. Abandon rules.

We’ve become accustomed to long, hot summers. Memories of childhood reinforce the thought of cooling off so much, it was necessary to lie on the rock shore to gain heat reflected from all day sun on the PreCambrian Shield. Even on cooler days, the rock warms up.

This year is different. Although there’s record heat and dry in the west, cottage country is experiencing a summer of another kind. Following on from an unusually warm and dry spring, rainfall in late June and July has filled our watershed. Waterfalls, usually quiet with a soothing trickle are roaring with spring vitality. At some, it’s possible to be cooled by the spray.

But it’s not just the falls that tell us of the change this year. Golf courses are soft and very green. On occasion, some have even suspended play to allow for excess water to drain away.

On the water, levels are above the norm. Lakes with significant annual variation have yet to reach their summer time lows. Lakes with little annual variation, are brimming. Waterways from the Great Lakes across the Province to The Rideau are full.

If you’re boating, be mindful of the wake you cause. Higher than usual water levels, mean higher than usual wave action at the shore. If the shore is Shield, then there may be no problem. If it’s anything else, you can be sure erosion is in the equation. Erosion can cause damage of all kinds. The most important is to natural shoreline which effects lake and river ecology. Change the shore and the lake suffers.

“Come on in! The water’s fine! “ Let’s keep it that way for generations who will follow. Cottage with care.

Here are this week’s treasures. Want more info? is where you find us.
