The first full week of July. Almost normal. Renters are in place, lakes are busy, shops are open and patios are appropriately distanced. What’s different? Camps are closed and remain quiet. Caterpillars aren’t noisy either, but they are certainly eating their way through the canopy. Underfoot they are slippery. Rainfall rates exceed the usual. Intensity the last two days has been almost tropical. The downpour at times deafening! Be on the lookout for washouts. Roads may be unsafe for vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. Paved or gravel, water does not discriminate.

One very welcome sign is Farmers Markets are back. Whether you’re looking for honey, berries, baked goods, smoked meats, crafts or just a sense of being out with people again, the markets are a summer ritual that speak community in the nicest way. This year, more than ever, people are happy to be out enjoying fresh air, chatting with neighbours and savouring the sights and smells of fresh. There are ‘pick your own’ farms too. In that regard you don’t have to wait for market day to celebrate the good things that grow. It’s berry time! Peas are starting and beans will be here in a few days.

Talking about the next few days, the weather forecast looks damp. If picking fruits and veggies is not your choice, then picking a board game for the Muskoka room, dusting off the cribbage board or curling up with a good book is just as good. If the day’s warm, why not wash your hair under the downspout? Rainwater is soft and feels really decadent.

Cottage life is simple pleasure. We think of it as being time worn. By that we mean polished to a fine patina of treasured memories that can be re-enacted every summer. Traditions we share and value come back to life with new strength. Perhaps this year, with a little more meaning than most.

Our week’s picks show promise of new traditions being formed and treasured ones being polished again. Take a look! Questions? We have answers. is the place to start.
