We’re in the middle. Middle of what? you ask. Dog days, comes the reply. From about July 3 until August 10 this year, are the dog days of summer. The Romans referred to this time as ‘diès canicularès’’ because the sun was nearest to Sirius, the brightest star visible from earth and part of Canis Major, the greater dog constellation. It’s not because dogs like to loll about in the heat, tongues out…
Coming after dog days is the Perseus meteor shower, an annual event which equates to heaven’s fireworks, with shooting stars occurring every 20 or 30 seconds.More on that in a week or two.
Watching the dark sky is a real treat when away from city lights. So much more is visible. If you have never been to a dark sky preserve like Torrance Barrens on a clear night, it’s worth the trip. It’s a lot safer than going out into the middle of the lake and turning the lights off! Seeing the dark sky clearly brings a distinct feeling of calm and awe. The majesty of the Milky Way dwarfs our imagination when we realize we’re looking at only the edge of our galaxy, and not the heavens beyond.
This year, though, the sky is not so clear. We’ve had a lot of cloud cover and rain. This week smoke from forest fires hundreds of miles west and north has made its way east. One unexpected visual gift is the setting sun, a brilliant orange orb hanging above the horizon. Dramatic and amazing to see, except when one realizes the cause.
In one regard, we’ve been fortunate. Our forests are not tinderlike this year. The fire risk, here, is low. As cottagers, enjoying the northern forests we have a responsibility to preserve and protect this wonderful resource. Fire pits need to be well away from shrubbery, roots and overhanging branches. Have a bucket of sand or water handy ‘just in case’. Don’t forget the fire services around here are pretty much volunteer. It takes time for them to respond to the call. Safety first!
The forests are not the only asset. Cottages are significant ones too. Whether large or small, old or new, for many of us they have special meaning that grows more important year after year. Here is this week’s selection of special places. Questions? Info@rosskoka.com is where to find us!
