As the seasons change, walking through the woods, kicking up fallen leaves stimulates the senses. The smell of leaves is different this time of year. And scents, as you know, stimulate memory. One memory I have from childhood is wondering why, when it gets cold, do trees take their clothes off? Another was watching goldfinches change from their bright summer yellow to a subdued drabness with only a hint of summer glory in their coat.
The last two weeks have been grand. Fall colours this year have had snap. The reds are redder than they have been for years. Scarlet, magenta, crimson all decided to compete for glory. It’s been superb!
Yet the rain, hail and some snow of this week have had a decidedly different effect on the waterscape. Yes, the shoreline has been aflame, but one of our great symbols of the Lakelands has put on his winter coat. Unlike weasels who effectively change from brown to white, the common loon fades. Its sharply defined markings blend. White and grey grow, grizzling its body like the muzzle of a long-loved dog. Unlike the tree fanfare of flaming change, our friend the loon grows old before our eyes. No glory here. Just muted mourning of a summer gone.
Our cottage market has not yet put on its winter coat. Although the number of new listings has begun to trail off a bit, there are almost 4 times as many new offerings as there are price changes. Just as some of the new offerings are sweet, so some of the price changes have been significant. Take a look!
