Lake effect. Living in cottage country, lake effect has lots of meaning. Lake effect has impact on land value. Lake effect has impact on recreational activity. Lake effect has influence on how you feel, just sitting and watching waves – whether they’re sparkling in the sun or crashing on the shore. Even the lake effect of gentle lapping is like a lullaby. People often sleep better by the water.

This month, lake effect is making itself felt in another way. Snow and ice. Yes, temperature has something to do with it. Lake effect happens when cooled air passes over warmer water. Precipitation forms, usually as snow. Winds can cause streamers and that’s when snow squalls happen. Clear one minute, whiteout the next. Want December in November? Try Muskoka! Check out Bala’s Trek to Jerusalem too…a special way to think of the season.

Come to Muskoka this week and you’ll see the land is covered with about 8 cm of hard frozen snow – more like white ice. Shorelines have disappeared because our lakes are freezing (about a month early). In some spots ice is clear and smooth, not safe for skating, but ice nevertheless.

Viewing property is work. Cottages that are closed have difficult access. People are still coming north even though new listings are few and far between and other properties have been taken off the market for winter.

If you have a portal from us there will still be a few changes and you’ll receive notification when those changes occur. Check in every now and then. If there’s something you want to see, we’ll set it up. Bring your boots!

Our next Marketwatch will be in December. In the meantime check here for what’s changed… new listings and new prices…
