The Muskoka Watershed is managed. There are dams and cataracts running from its source in Algonquin Park all the way to Georgian Bay. It’s a large area. In fact, it’s bigger than Canada’s smallest Province. Elevation changes in the watershed are significant. The Highlands receive much more snowfall than lower areas of the watershed. Temperatures are different too. Spring flowers can be blooming along the banks of the Moon River while snow is still yet to melt upstream.
Variation in snowpack, temperature at elevation, melt rates and spring precipitation create a dynamic equation which keeps those managing and working with water flow on their toes.
In those rare years where heavy snowpack melts quickly and spring precipitation is more than usual, some flooding occurs. Occasionally disastrous results of boathouses being torn from their docks or worse happen. Under most circumstances though, the dynamic equation is predictable and spring melt passes with only a ripple.
This year the ripple has passed. The lakes are open! Boating has begun several weeks ahead of normal. With average ice out being April 17-21, and high water usually after that date, we are weeks ahead of schedule.
The cottage market is vibrant too. It’s not for the faint of heart either. Find a place you like and you can bet several others will like it too.
