It’s gone from the Big 3 and after tonight, ice will be gone from most of the other lakes in our trading area. Ice free! But we’re not out of the woods yet.
The Muskoka watershed is straining at its edges. Rivers are at or over their banks, lakes have pushed the boundaries of high water marks and our landscape is changing. Yesterday erosion collapsed a bank on the Muskoka River between Bracebridge and Lake Muskoka. Unfortunately Peerless II took the brunt of falling trees and debris at her winter moorage.
On the big lakes, docks are underwater and some boathouses have felt the impact of ice sheets moving with the wind. It’s a tough spring for the watershed and a windfall for carpenters. Lumber yards will be busy!
Not all lakes are suffering. In fact, most are not, especially spring fed ones and those high enough to have water flowing out of them as opposed to into them. We were showing property on smaller lakes this past week as well as on the big water. Very different scenes. On the smaller lakes water level was not an issue.
