The nights are slowly lengthening and, if the early mornings in these parts are anything to go by, they are cooling too. With the cool comes clearer skies. After sunset, the sky takes a page from the Webb telescope. As far as the eye can see there are points of light. Magnificent!
On the dock, or boathouse roof, away from other lights, the sky is the map by which ancient travellers navigated. With GPS on our phones, knowledge of the night sky has become sparse. We see stars, but for many of us, information beyond that is limited. Looking at the heavens as a means of navigation is a lost language.
Yet there’s something about the night sky, sitting on a dock and feeling like being part of something much bigger. It makes our problems seem very small indeed. A weight is lifted and with that comes the peace and recharging we get with sitting by a lake. Wonderful.
