The other day, with my windshield view filled with the glory of a forest at the height of its colour, I rounded a corner and was forced to a stop. Facing me was a Tom turkey fluffed up and looking just like one of those you see in pictures of Puritans at Thanksgiving.

He was staring me down. In his mind, I was on his territory. Regardless of my size, he was bigger than me. He stood there, daring me to move. In fact, he started to come towards me. To be compliant, I backed away a bit. He stopped. Then out of the bushes came one, then two, and ultimately seventeen hens and young ones, crossing the roadway in their own good time. Turkey time.
