Hemlocks are an interesting tree. Found throughout our trading area, they grow in community. Hemlocks are rarely found growing as a single specimen. If one falls, there’s a better than even chance another will too. They depend on one another for support. Root systems are shallow and intertwine with other hemlocks. Their canopy, when together, is dense. In winter they offer shelter. It’s a pretty safe bet you’ll find deer under hemlocks when the snow flies.
Hemlock is a dense wood, heavy too. So dense, in fact, it doesn’t float well. Hemlocks float beneath the surface. Crib docks often use hemlock stringers because of their density, strength and lack of buoyancy. Not much grows under hemlocks either. A dense canopy that shields against snow also shields against light. The trees, though, are quite acidic. The needles they drop change soil chemistry. If you’ve ever walked under hemlock, you’ll recognize the soft, sponginess. Not much grows under hemlock.
On the weekend we were on a SW facing slope of MacBeth Island in Wood Lake. The hemlocks around us seemed to be on their tip toes, straining for the sky. Light was heavily filtered and the forest floor soft, muted tones of various mosses. Ahead lay a clearing. Perhaps one or two trees, fallen years ago, made the space. Now long gone, new life was taking over. The glade, surrounded by quiet Giants was like a chapel in a great cathedral. Quiet. Peaceful. The slope was covered in the new life of spring. Because they were dark in colour, they were hard to see at first. All of a sudden, focus! The glade was a carpet of deep red trilliums. We had to pause.
This past week in the cottage market listings have popped like trilliums. Water levels are approaching normal and cottages in all ranges have appeared. These next few weeks will be busy. Take a look.
